For the first time, a new Barrett’s esophagus (BE) consensus on terminology and definitions will be presented by the World Endoscopy Organization (WEO) at the 2nd World Congress of GI Endoscopy, ENDO 2020. The presentation will take place on Sunday, March 8, 2020, 16:00-17.00 and will be chaired by Dr Prateek Sharma (USA). The new consensus, created by WEO’s Barrett’s Esophagus Terminology and Classification System Working Group, highlights the importance of a consensus-based endoscopic classification system that provides endoscopists worldwide with practical tips for performing endoscopy in BE using a unified terminology.

This consensus-based system for endoscopic description and classification of BE has undergone extensive validation by acknowledged international endoscopic experts. Amended previous classifications, specific revised terminology, and old and new milestones in clinical practice served as the scientific basis for the new consensus.

This fundamental WEO work on Barrett’s esophagus can also serve other WEO committees as a framework for similar endeavors.
