Goals of the WEO ARA (Activities to Reach Africa) Project Ad-Hoc Committee
The general objective of the WEO ARA (Activities to Reach Africa) Project Ad-Hoc Committee is to establish a gastrointestinal endoscopic skill transfer program in partnership with collaborating institution on the African continent.
There is a lack of endoscopic services across the African continent; specifically, EGD, colonoscopy, ERCP and EUS. These tools play a crucial role in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal disorders. Africa has a population of 102 million, 40 endoscopist, 3-5 perform ERCP, and only recently 1 performs EUS. As such, endoscopic transfer skills activities not only in ERCP and EUS but mainly basic upper/colon quality standards with basic endotherapy may constitute the main focus of this committee. With the growing rates of obesity, smoking, physical inactivity, westernization of the diet, we anticipate an increase in GI related ailments warranting endoscopy intervention.
