On Friday, October 14, 2016, the WEO Colorectal Cancer Screening Committee (CRCSC) held its annual European meeting in the Austrian capital, Vienna, preceding UEG Week 2016. The event took place under the leadership of Professor Linda Rabeneck (Canada), WEO CRC SC Global Chair, and Professor Ernst Kuipers (Netherlands), WEO CRC SC Regional Chair for Europe/Middle East, at the Vienna Marriott hotel, located in the historic city center.
The meeting began with its traditional morning breakout sessions, where five WEO CRC SC Expert Working Group (EWG) meetings were held in two parallel sessions, namely the WEO Coalition to reduce inequities in CRC Screening, Right-sided lesions and interval cancers, Image Enhanced Endoscopy (IEE), FIT for Screening and Surveillance after colonic neoplasia.
There was not only a noticeable increase in attendance but also more EWG meetings compared to last year’s meeting in Barcelona, where only three of the six EWGs met.
The afternoon plenary session, which ran from 1.00 – 6.00 pm, was packed with presentations. More than 175 participants from 24 countries attended the plenary session and preceding Expert Working Group breakout meetings!
The faculty included 28 international experts who covered topics such as new techniques, population – risk groups, screening programs and guidelines and smart use of FIT. The concentrated sessions and lively discussion covered the latest research and controversies in the field. The lunch in the hotel’s restaurant, overlooking the colorful trees of the autumnal Vienna City Park, and the afternoon coffee break with traditional Viennese sweet treats offered a welcome opportunity to network with colleagues.
Participants consider these meetings as the world´s most relevant events in the field. The attendees praised the outstanding Expert Working Groups, cutting-edge scientific presentations and the networking opportunities with the key representatives of the field.
Overall, the WEO CRC SC meeting was the perfect start into an exciting congress week in Vienna.
