ENDO 2020, the second World Congress of GI Endoscopy of the World Endoscopy Organization (WEO), recently concluded in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and was a great success!
The congress enjoyed active participation from all WEO member organizations and was co-hosted by the Brazilian Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SOBED), with collaboration from the Interamerican Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED), which held the 24th Pan American Congress of Digestive Endoscopy at ENDO 2020.
The congress attracted more than 3000 participants from 79 countries, with 53% coming from Brazil and 29% from other Latin America countries, USA and Canada.
About 150 faculty members from all over the world, some of them participating remotely, contributed to making this a very successful event. Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 outbreak, faculty members demonstrated their great contribution and professional support for this joint effort, providing a high-quality scientific program covering all relevant aspects of endoscopy.
ENDO 2020 comprehensive scientific program
Over the course of 3 days, a wide range of live endoscopic procedures were conducted and explained in detail by various international and local experts. With high technical standards, the procedures were transmitted live from the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in Hyderabad (India), the Hospital das Clinicas University in Sao Paulo and the INCA Hospital in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Although the live endoscopy hall was well attended throughout the congress, the parallel sessions were also brimming with participants. More than 185 scientific sessions and 633 presentations including honorary lectures provided every delegate with a learning experience tailored to their particular interest.
Among the 793 submissions, 600 abstracts were presented as posters during the conference, 24 of which were selected as best abstracts and 21 with outstanding scientific contribution were presented at the podium.
International scientific symposia
The scientific symposia, hosted by all the ENDO 2020 international scientific supporters, and with the participation of renowned international experts, were well received.
We would like to thank all our international scientific supporters for providing a platform for robust discussions on recent theoretical and practical advances in the fields of obesity, post-surgical biliary complications, and colorectal cancer, among others, and on the impact of this research for healthcare professionals: Brazilian Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SOBED), the Interamerican Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED), American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), Asian-Pacific Society for Digestive Endoscopy (A-PSDE), European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE), Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES), Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (KSGE), Pan-Arab Association of Gastroenterology (PAAG), Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (SGEI)
A great number of participants attended the 24th Pan American Congress of Digestive Endoscopy of the Interamerican Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED), which included joint symposia, the Libertadores Video Cup, and honorary lecture, making this meeting a remarkable success.
Best training and learning opportunities
Alongside the parallel scientific sessions, two full days of extensive hands-on training including 32 sessions with international and local experts for advanced and non-advanced procedures was offered. Here, under the expert guidance of international and local faculty, more than 300 participants had the opportunity to learn from the best of the best and move from the more passive learning of the big lectures to active training. The format was well received and all sessions were packed to full capacity. The participants benefitted not only from the expertise of the faculty but also from the opportunity to use simulators and models to practice or refine endoscopic techniques.
Apart from these learning opportunities, participants had the chance to visit and learn about the most recent advances from our industry partners at the buzzing ENDO 2020 exhibition and industry-sponsored symposia. We would like to thank all our international and local partners of ENDO 2020 for their engagement and we are very grateful for their continued support, especially in these uncertain times.
Many delegates expressed their satisfaction at having a congress with such a varied and extended program dedicated to endoscopy. The world congress once again proved to be the ideal platform for the international endoscopy community to meet, exchange knowledge and experience, and to establish best practices.
Dr Jean-Francois Rey, ENDO 2020 President said: “It has been a great pleasure to welcome friends, colleagues and the endoscopy community to our world congress in Rio de Janeiro. WEO’s World Congress is a truly important international meeting. With this year’s participants attending from 91 countries, the congress continues to attract people from all around the world.“
“Thanks to the fantastic work of Dr Fabian Emura, Chair of the Scientific Committee and the Scientific Committee, a very large number of abstracts were submitted for ENDO 2020 and, notably, there was a gratifyingly high number from emerging countries. A huge thank you also to Dr Jairo Silva Alves, President and Dr Ricardo Dib, Vice President of the Brazilian Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SOBED) and Dr Asadur Jorge Tchekmedyian, President of the Interamerican Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED) for their great partnership and help in organizing ENDO 2020 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Let me thank everyone who contributed to the congress and I look forward to welcoming everyone to ENDO 2022 in Kyoto, Japan, to continue working together promoting the best practices in endoscopy worldwide.”
Local and international participants from far and wide praised the warm hospitality and positive atmosphere during the event. The program ended with an overwhelmingly positive response from the participants, faculty, and industry.
Thank you, Rio de Janeiro, for being such a great host city to come back to!
